Doctors/Dentists

Imagine helping a community in one of the poorest countries in the world as it builds its own healthcare system. Then imagine working with highly motivated citizens of that community to help them become accomplished doctors and nurses.

It is already happening …..and YOU can be apart of it now by contributing at a variety of levels:

VISIT THE MEDICAL CLINIC

Engaging with the clinic staff and patients first hand will expand your vision of the opportunities exponentially. You will see first hand how far a minimal investment in time and resources gets multiplied. Ask us to help setup a visit for your group or join an already scheduled trip as an individual.

BE A SPONSOR/MENTOR

SPONSOR A NURSE

nurse

All of the registered nurses who work at the clinic graduated from the OFCB high school and their nursing education was supported through Friends of OFCB. The salaries ($500/month) are given by friends at Charlotte churches, one by a church mission committee, and one by the OrthoCarolina Foundation to support the Community Healthworker Training Program that is entering its second year. These are one year commitments and additional support is needed.

MENTOR A NURSE

What could be more encouraging for a newly graduated RN in a rural, resource poor Haitian community than to have a nurse friend in the US with whom she can talk and exchange emails? They work in a very different environment from ours, but there are many commonalities to be shared and much self-esteem to be fostered.

MENTOR THE DENTIST

dentist

Would you enjoy providing technical support and encouragement to a newly graduated DDS in a rural, resource poor Haitian community? Just talking and exchanging emails with Simon will be so helpful. True, these professionals work in a very different environment from ours, but we have much in common and there is much self-esteem to be fostered.

Dr. Simon Alexandre is also a graduate of the school established by OFCB. His dental education was funded by Friends of OFCB. At this point we are in need of a sponsor for his salary. We are hoping to secure his $700 a month for three years so that he will be able to provide not only direct patient care but also very necessary dental education outreach. Most of the 80,000 people living in the Bayonnais valley have never been to a dentist or had any education about the how and why of dental health. It will take many outreach programs for them to begin to understand what dentistry is about. This will help the dental clinic grow its patient base and educate a populace.

MENTOR THE DOCTOR

Dr. Faustin Charles, a member of the OFCB High School’s first graduating class, will complete his general surgery training at the government hospital in Cap Haitian in January 2017. He will then return to Bayonnais as the clinic’s director and chief medical officer. Our plan is to have Dr. Faustin receive several mini fellowships in the US over the next ensuing years in areas of his choice. Once the clinic is built out as planned, it will have operating and delivery suites that will allow a full range of services for him to oversee. Periodic visits from mentoring physicians will be extremely valuable to the community.

BUY MEDICATION FOR THE CLINIC

The most consistently unmet need for the clinic’s operation is funds for medication. The clinic includes medication in its per patient visit fee. There is very little money for vaccines as well. This is an enormous opportunity for a donor to impact thousands of people in this community.
